New smart radars have been installed in Dubai to catch motorists who use mobile phones while driving, or fail to wear seatbelts. The new radars will also catch motorists who do not change lanes properly. “The device detects offences committed by reckless drivers including the use of handheld mobile phones, failure to abide by lane discipline, not fastening the seat belt, sudden deviation and other traffic violations that pose danger to road users,” said Brigadier Saif Muheir Al Mazrouei, director of the General Traffic Department at Dubai Police. According to the Dubai Police, the new radars feature artificial intelligence techniques and can be programmed to detect any traffic violation. It is also connected through a 4G-enabled network to the Dubai Police’s platform and radar management system. Under the UAE traffic law, motorists who use mobile phones while driving will be fined Dh800 and get four black points on their traffic file. Failure to wear seatbelts will also attract a fine of Dh400 per person, with the driver also getting four black points on his or her traffic file. Motorists caught swerving or not properly changing lanes will be fined Dh1,000 and given four black points. Also on March 2, a new smart system was installed at pedestrian crossings in Dubai. Motorists who fail to give way to pedestrians will be fined Dh500 and given six black points. ICA/Expat Media
