New gas reserves have been discovered in Sharjah’s Al Hadiba field, the Sharjah Petroleum Council announced. The newly discovered gas reserves are located north of the Al Sajaa Industrial Area in Sharjah and are in “promising economically viable quantities.” Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah congratulated Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, on the discovery of the gas reserves. “May God make it good and a blessing for Sharjah, its people and its lovers,” Sheikh Sultan wrote on his social media account X. The new field was discovered after the Sharjah National Oil Corporation drilled a well over the past few months. The well is expected to be tested this week to confirm the quantities and potential gas reserves of the field for development. The Al Hadiba field is the fifth onshore field in Sharjah, in addition to the Al Saja’a, Kahif and Mahani fields, as well as Muayed, which has been converted into a gas storage field. The UAE holds the seventh-largest proven reserves of natural gas in the world at over 215 trillion cubic feet, according to figures from the US Energy Information Agency. The UAE is seeking to become self-sufficient in gas supply by 2030. It currently imports natural gas from Qatar through the Dolphin pipeline to supply power plants and desalination plants.
