New hoax message targeting Filipinos in UAE, says Dubai pageant
DUBAI – A WhatsApp message using a recent beauty pageant in Dubai to lure Filipinos in the UAE to invest in a housing scheme was being circulated on social media on Thursday (October 4).
Organisers of the popular Man of the Philippines-UAE Filipino pageant that culminated over the weekend warned that the WhatsApp message is a hoax.
“It has been brought to our attention that WhatsApp messages are being circulated by unscrupulous individuals misusing Man of the Philippines-UAE for certain marketing campaigns. Man of the Philippines-UAE is not connected to these companies or individuals and can not vouch for their authenticity. Please exercise caution when dealing with these individuals or companies and report them to the relevant authorities if necessary,” organisers said in a statement to Expatmedia.net and on the pageant’s Facebook page.
The WhatsApp message claimed that the sender was able to contact the recipient since the Philippine real estate company he was representing was allegedly a major sponsor of the pageant.
The message also offered Filipino Overseas Workers (OFWs) with a “promo” of free housing and a so-called program for OFWs to maximize their earnings and "earn millions".
Organisers told Expatmedia.net that the company in question was not a sponsor of the pageant and that the sender is not connected to the pageant or its organisers. Expatmedia.net also tried calling the number indicated on the message, but it appeared that the sender's mobile phone has been switched off.
“The company is not connected with us in any way. The message is a hoax and is maliciously using our prestigious event for their marketing campaign,” Ryan Banks, one of the organisers of Man of the Philippines-UAE, told Expatmedia.net.
Hundreds of Filipinos crowded the Carlton Palace Hotel in Dubai on Friday to watch two Filipinos best 11 others to bag the top titles for a spot in the grand finals in Manila in November. Ian Rowe Giron was named Man of the Philippines-UAE while Kevinson Piñeza De Ocampo was named Man of the Philippines-Dubai.
As of press time, there was yet no comment from the company mentioned in the WhatsApp message.
This is not the first time fraudsters have used companies and organisations to target victims in the UAE. In April, Lulu Hypermarket warned of several incidents of what it described as attempted fraud using the company’s name on social media.
