Philippines bans deployment of new domestic workers to Kuwait
MANILA – The Philippines has banned the deployment of newly hired household service workers to Kuwait amid outrage over the death of a Filipino in the Gulf country.
The partial ban, announced on Friday (January 3) came as the Philippine government expressed outrage over the death of household worker Jeanelyn Padernal Villavende, who was reportedly beaten to death by her employer in Kuwait.
The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration said that the partial ban on sending newly hired Filipino household workers to Kuwait is effectively immediately.
The ban will not affect workers who have been issued Overseas Employment Certificates (OECs) on or before 5pm of January 3.
Meanwhile, labour group Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) has called for a joint monitoring committee on the investigation on the death of Villavende.
Authorities in the Philippines said that the domestic worker was purportedly killed by her employer’s wife.
This sparked calls from TUCP for a joint monitoring committee for fair investigation, pointing out that the spouse of the suspect is an employee at the Kuwait Department of Interior.
