The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has introduced a new shared taxi service, allowing passengers to travel between Dubai and Abu Dhabi for only Dh66 per person. Launched on Tuesday (November 5), the service aims to provide affordable intercity transport, priced significantly lower than regular taxis for this route. The new shared taxi service is currently in a six-month trial phase, with plans for potential expansion if successful. The route connects two popular hubs: Ibn Battuta Centre in Dubai and Al Wahda Centre in Abu Dhabi, both of which are strategically chosen for their accessibility to public transportation and parking facilities. "Both Ibn Battuta Centre and Al Wahda Centre were selected after a thorough analysis of potential routes," said Adel Shakri, Director of Planning and Business Development at the RTA. "This initiative aims to reduce travel costs, especially for regular commuters between Dubai and Abu Dhabi." The cost-saving shared taxi service allows passengers to split the fare. With four passengers, each pays Dh66, which is 75 percent cheaper than hiring a regular taxi. For two passengers, the fare is Dh132, and for three passengers, it's Dh88 per rider. Payments can be made conveniently via bank cards or the RTA’s Nol cards. In addition to cost savings, the shared taxi initiative is part of the RTA’s broader sustainability goals, aiming to reduce traffic congestion and lower carbon emissions. RTA’s taxis are equipped with safety features like cameras linked to the Operations Control Centre, ensuring a secure journey while monitoring driver performance for safety compliance.
