DUBAI – The reduced speed limit on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road is still under study and may be pushed back to 120kph, a police official said.
Major General Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Dubai Police’s Assistant Commander-in-chief for Operations, and head of the UAE Federal Traffic Council, said that police will assess the effectivity of the new speed limit in bringing down the number of accidents on the busy highway.
In the first six months of this year, there were 99 accidents reported on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road. Six were killed and 78 were injured in those accidents.
“When we reduced the speed limit from 120kph to 110kph, our aim was to save lives and statistics before and after six months at least will determine that," Al Zafein said on Twitter.
"If the comparison results are the same or negative on March 15, then I promise everyone to apologise and work with the RTA to revert to the speed as it was,” he said.
On October 15, the maximum speed limit on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road was reduced to 110kph.
On October 20, a 16-year-old girl died after a vehicle slipped and hit a concrete barrier before overturning on the highway near Silicon Oasis.
This was the first known fatal accident on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road following the reduction of the speed limit from 120kph to 110kph.
