New spider species named after 'Harry Potter' arachnid

IRAN - A new species of wolf spider has been discovered in southeastern Iran and was named after the gigantic arachnid named Aragog in the "Harry Potter" books and movies that is able to perceive or feel things. The reason why the name was given to the newly-discovered group of spiders is that they have similar characteristics as the Harry Potter creepy crawly. The new wolf spiders however are way smaller than the "Harry Potter" arachnids. University of Tehran researchers were looking for butterflies in a mountainous region in southeastern Iran when they chanced upon the one-inch long and two-inch wide spiders and found out after examining the arachnids, they were an unknown wolf spider species from the Lycosidae family. Alireza Zamani, a member of the team from the Iranian university, said the Lycosa Aragogi spiders have similar characteristics (near identical exoskeletons, a furry body and eight inset eyes) to Aragog. Thus, they named the new wolf spider species Lycosa aragogi. Aragog was introduced in the 2002 movie "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets". The spider is a friend of Hagrid – a half-giant and half-human who is the Keeper of Keys and Grounds of Hogwarts. Aragog was modeled after the wolf spider. Lycosa aragogi however differ from other wolf spiders because of the unique genital structure in females, the researchers said. The new species of wolf spiders are aggressive nocturnal hunters; they do not make webs; they mainly eat crickets and other small insects; and they are venomous but their venom is not toxic or large enough to harm a human, according to the scientists. The researchers believe Lycosa aragogi may also live in other regions of Iran and in neighboring countries. Lycosa aragogi is not the first spider whose name was taken from the Harry Potter novels and movies. Indian researchers gave the name Eriovixia gryffindori to a newly discovered spider because the arachnid resembled the shape of Hogwarts' famous sorting hat. Meanwhile, the discovery was published in Zootaxa, a scientific journal on animal taxonomy. Brian Brown, curator of entomology at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, told CNN: ""There are at least hundreds, if not thousands, of spiders in the world that have not been discovered. Much of the world is still a frontier for discovery."
