New UAE family sponsor system to be based on income

  DUBAI – Expatriates will soon be allowed to sponsor family members based on income rather than profession, as the UAE Cabinet moved to amend the country’s residency rules. The Cabinet on Sunday said the decision is aimed at “enhancing family stability of foreign workers and social cohesion, as well as attracting highly skilled workers”. According to the General Secretariat of the Cabinet, the amended provisions now indicate "income" as a requirement for sponsoring family members, instead of the previously listed "professions" that allowed workers to sponsor their families. Currently, residents can only sponsor family members if they hold certain job titles. Under the current system, skilled workers are not allowed to sponsor their family members. The salary is also taken into consideration, with male sponsors expected to meet a mininimum salary requirement of Dh4,000 or Dh3,000 plus accommodation. Women who want to sponsor their children must meet the minimum salary requirement of Dh10,000. The Cabinet called on government departments “to conduct studies to assess and enhance the services provided to residents, including aspects of education and health, and encourage the active participation of their family member in the job market as an alternative to recruiting new workers from abroad, within the existing policies and regulations,” according to state news agency Wam.
