Permanent residency for expats in UAE gets nod

  DUBAI – A first batch of 6,800 people will be given permanent residence in UAE as part of a new permanent residence scheme announced by the Dubai ruler on Tuesday (May 21). His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, announced that the scheme will be available to selected expatriates. "We have launched a permanent residence system 'Gold Card' in the UAE for investors and exceptional competencies in the fields of medicine, engineering, science, and arts. The first batch of permanent residence will be given to 6,800 investors whose total investments are Dh100 billion," Sheikh Mohammed said in a tweet. The Dubai ruler said that the permanent residence Gold Card will be given to “distinguished individuals, exceptional talents and anyone who contributes positively to UAE's success story”. “We want them to be permanent partners with us in our journey. All residents of the UAE are our brothers and part of our big family," Sheikh Mohammed said. On May 1, the UAE enforced a new rule on the issuance of five-year visas for exceptional students and entrepreneurs. The move is part of the UAE Cabinet’s decision last year approving the long-term visa system that also includes a 10-year residency visa for investors, specialists and students. Who will be granted a 10-year residency visa?

Investors and specialists in the medical, scientific, research and technical fields along with their families, as well as all scientists and creative people and exceptional students (with grade ‘A’).

Who will get a 5-year residence visa?

This type of visa will be given to foreign students studying in the UAE.

What else can students expect?

The new decision also orders the extension of residency for students sponsored by their parents after completion of their graduate studies to give them more time to decide on career paths.

Who will implement the new directives?

Sheikh Mohammed directed the Ministry of Economy in coordination with the concerned parties to implement the resolution and follow up on its developments, and to submit a detailed study in the third quarter of this year. Here are the kinds of long-term visas introduced in the UAE this year

Five-year visa

Good for: Investors How to qualify: Must purchase of property worth at least Dh5 million that is not loaned Good for: Outstanding students How to qualify: At least 95 percent in secondary level and distinction of at least 3.75 GPA upon graduation from universities within and outside UAE

Five-year multi-entry visa

Good for: Entrepreneurs How to qualify: Have previous project worth a minimum of Dh500,000 or having the approval of an accredited business incubator in UAE

10-year visa

Good for: Doctors, specialists, scientists, creative individuals in culture and art, and investors 
How to qualify: Subject to certain conditions, including valid employment contract


10-year renewable visa

Good for: investors How to qualify: Have public investments through deposit, an established business partnership of Dh10 million or more, or a total investment of not less than Dh10 million.
