New UAE policy for senior citizens approved

  DUBAI - The UAE Cabinet has approved the National Policy for Senior Emiratis as part of the UAE Vision 2021 and the UAE Centennial Strategy 2071. The policy ensures that senior citizens are provided access to government services in terms of healthcare, community involvement, civic participation, infrastructure and transportation, financial stability, safety and security, and quality of future life. "We adopted the National Policy for Senior Emiratis to improve the quality of their lives and ensure their active and ongoing participation within the UAE community," said His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. "We cannot realise family and society coherence unless we guarantee a modest life to them," Sheikh Mohammed said. Under the healthcare initiatives, senior citizens will get basic health cover while healthcare providers will undergo training programmes. Training courses will also be organised to boost the skills of senior citizens under the community involvement initiative. Programmes will also be launched to attract retired Emiratis with experience in all fields so as to benefit from their expertise in business or education. Initiatives will also be launched to invite local institutions to support leading projects and offer facilities to help senior Emirati citizens set up private projects. A hotline will be established to ensure that senior Emiratis can call authorities to report abuse or maltreatment. They will also get special discounts on the fare when using public transport. Sheikh Mohammed said senior citizens are the UAE's pride and model. He urged the youth to learn from senior citizens, a term that he said must now replace "old people".
