New UAE rule in pipeline to end antibiotic misuse

DUBAI - A draft for a new UAE legislation is underway to combat the misuse of antibiotics without medical prescription, a health official said on Saturday (November 18). Some 2,400 private pharmacies will be under scrutiny as the Health Ministry works on combating the "dangerous practice" of dispensing prescription drugs without a doctor's prescription, said Dr. Amin Hussein Al Amiri, Assistant Undersecretary for Public Health Policy and Licensing of the ministry. Al Amiri said that the legislation is being considered following the World Health Organization's (WHO) reports on the prevalence of the threat created by bacterial resistance to antibiotics. According to WHO, the indiscriminate use of antibiotics leads to epidemics unless there is intervention and radical solutions. Al Amiri said that health authorities will intensify inspection of private pharmacies to ensure that they are not violating pharmaceutical rules.
