Newly discovered star named ‘Sharjah’ of the UAE

  PARIS – A newly discovered star has been named “Sharjah”, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) announced in Paris. The union said on Wednesday that it also picked the name “Barjeel” for one of the star’s planets. The IAU said naming the new star after Sharjah was a nod to the emirate’s contributions to culture. Organisers lauded the efforts of Sharjah to the global scientific community as "Cultural Capital of the world", "Capital of Islamic Culture", and "World Book Capital". This is the second time that a campaign has ben launched to name stars and exoplanets. Organisers said that they received 360,000 proposals for names. A committee shortlisted the proposals from 112 countries, which were presented for public poll. A total of 420,000 people voted.
