No ban on Dubai school canteens during Ramadan

DUBAI – While most Dubai schools keep their canteens closed during Ramadan, the Dubai education authority clarified that no directive has been issued on the matter. The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) has confirmed that schools in Dubai are not banned from operating canteens during Ramadan as long as food is consumed in designated areas. The KHDA reminded schools, however, to be respectful of those who are fasting. “Out of respect for the holy month of Ramadan and also for fasting students, staff and parents, eating and drinking must be prohibited in the public areas of each school. It should be limited to private, designated areas during this time,” the KHDA said. In Dubai, authorities are increasingly supporting food businesses to keep their establishments open for non-Muslims during Ramadan. In many malls, food courts are now open even during Ramadan.
