No criminal charges for drug users if he or she comes forward to the authorities

  DUBAI – The Dubai Police on Wednesday allayed public concerns about residents involved in drug abuse but fail to turn themselves in or request for treatment for fear of criminal prosecution and deportation. "Drug user would not be prosecuted if he/she comes forward to the authorities to seek treatment for addiction," the Dubai Police said in a Twitter post.   Under article 43 of the Anti-Drug Law, addicts who voluntarily approach the Public Prosecution and seek help for treatment will not face criminal charges. Addicts are also required to surrender to authorities any drug in their possession. Addicts who refuse treatment will face legal action. The Dubai Police message on Wednesday echoed the same sentiment raised by a top official at a Federal Council Meeting (FNC) in May. "Drug addicts, both citizens and foreigners, who voluntarily turn themselves in and request treatment will face no criminal charges or deportation,” Lieutenant General Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, told the FNC. “UAE is the home of foreigners from all over the world, and we live together in harmony. We encourage expatriates who are involved in drug abuse to turn themselves in and request treatment, so that the drug scourge can be addressed once and for all. Refusing to receive treatment exacerbates the problem,” Sheikh Saif said. Sheikh Saif, however, said a person's job will be taken into consideration. "Addict teachers may not be allowed to teach our children,” Sheikh Saif said.
