Prime Minister Abe calls missile launch 'the most serious and grave threat' to Japan

  TOKYO – Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Tuesday lambasted North Korea for firing a missile over Japan, describing the act as "the most serious and grave" threat to the country and a "reckless act". The missile was launched before 6 a.m. and according to reports, it flew over Erimomisaki on Hokkaido island and then broke apart, with three big pieces falling just 1,180 kms. off the Japanese eastern coast. The missile firing set off warnings on the northern island of Japan for people to rush to bomb shelter. Reports said it was the first time since 1998 that Pyongyang fired a missile over Japan and that was during a test of a satellite launch vehicle. The other time is a failed launch of a missile in 2009, which crashed into the Pacific Ocean. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told journalists in an urgently-called press conference that they did not receive reports of damage to aircraft or ships in northern Japan or over the sea where pieces of the missile landed. Abe, for his part, said: "We have fully grasped the movement of the missile immediately after their launch and have been taking every possible effort to protect the lives of people. It is a serious and grave threat which impairs the safety and peace of the region."
