Hwasong-12 missile is capable of carrying a big nuclear warhead, according to North Korea

  PYONGYANG – North Korea has test-fired a ballistic missile that is capable of carrying a large nuclear warhead, the state news agency KCNA reported yesterday. KCNA said that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised the launch of the Hwasong-2 missile near the city of Kusong in western North Korea. The missile shot up to 2,111.5 kilometers or 1,312 miles in the air and flew 787 kilometers or 489 miles across the country and crashed into the Sea of Japan, hitting the water about 60 miles off Vladivostok, Russia. According to US officials quoted by CNN, that's closer to Russia than previous tests done by North Korea. Russia responded to the test by putting its eastern air defenses on high alert, the RIA-Novosti news agency reported yesterday. "We cannot fail to understand that the territory of Russia is not only an object for attack but also a place where a missile may fall. In order to protect ourselves from possible incidents, we will keep our air defense systems in the Far East in a state of increased combat readiness," Viktor Ozerov, head of the Federation Council Committee on Defense and Security, was quoted as saying. KCNA said the Hwasong-12 test-firing proved that the US mainland and its Pacific territories are "within striking range of a missile strike" as Pyongyang warned Washington against any provocation. KCNA quoted Pypngyang as saying that the Hwasong-12 test was "aimed at verifying the tactical and technological specifications of the newly developed ballistic rocket capable of carrying a large-size heavy nuclear warhead." CNN said David Wright, co-director of the Union of Concerned Scientists, said in his organization's blog that if the missile did reach that height and fly at such a distance, it could reach the US territory of Guam in the Pacific, where the Andersen Air Force Base is located. The base hosts American heavy bombers like the B-1s, B-2s and B-52s. Meanwhile, US Press Secretary Sean Spicer said, "with the missile impacting so close to Russian soil -- in fact, closer to Russia than to Japan -- the President cannot imagine that Russia is pleased. Let this latest provocation serve as a call for all nations to implement far stronger sanctions against North Korea." South Korean presidential spokesman Yoon Young-chan, for his part, said President Moon Jae-in considers the missile test as a violation of UN Security Council resolutions and a severe challenge to the peace and security of the Korean Peninsula and of the world.
