Now you can test for stress in Dubai

DUBAI – While a little stress is not a bad thing, too much stress can lead to all sorts of health issues, according to a UK-based nutrition expert on a recent visit to Dubai. “It impacts every system in our body,” Dr. Marilyn Glenville told Expatmedia.net in an interview at her Glenville Nutrition Clinic at The Retreat Palm Dubai. Glenville was in Dubai in September to launch her clinic's "stress test", a new way of testing someone's stress levels based on four saliva samples sent to the laboratory in Dubai. "Based on the test, our experts can then suggest dietary or supplementary changes to help the person change what they can change," she said. Stress is the number one workplace health issue in the UAE, according to a new survey by global advisory firm Willis Towers Watson. Majority or 80 percent of people in the UAE are stressed, experts say. Chronic stress can affect one’s brain function, skin, heart, the immune system and the digestive system, explained Dr. Glenville. This is why people who are stressed have a loss of concentration, or what is often referred to as “brain fog”. “In some people, stress causes skin allergies and increases the risk of heart attacks or strokes,” she said. It can also weaken one’s immune system and digestive system, leading to irritable bowel, bloating and flatulence.

How to control stress

“Ironically some people may be using coffee or energy drinks to get through the day to cope but they’re stimulants, they’re going to make them to feel more stressed, more anxious,” Dr. Glenville said. She suggested using green tea as an alternative, and advised that people should avoid high-sugar food like chocolates that are only going to create a “roller coaster” boost of energy. “Get in some exercise to release stress hormones,” she added. Sleep is important as well, she said, adding that 7 to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep is ideal starting at 10pm. To get quality sleep, Dr. Glenville said that people must switch off gadgets about an hour before bedtime.
