The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has reiterated its ban on the use of nylon fishing nets, stressing the importance of protecting marine life and ensuring sustainable fishing practices in the emirate. In a recent operation, a group of fishermen caught violating this rule were issued fines, the agency confirmed. The use of nylon nets is prohibited under EAD rules, which also covers recreational fishing. Approved methods include lines and hooks, underwater rifles for free diving, and other methods determined by the EAD. Fishing competitions are only permitted for licensed entities in the marine activities sector. Recreational fishing license applicants must be at least 18 years old, although minors can accompany licensed adults. Applications for licenses must be submitted via the TAMM platform, along with required documents. Additional regulations include using diving flags during sea shotgun fishing and submitting a catch report to the EAD. The law also prohibits the sale or disposal of marine resources until boats return to land. Caught fish must meet size requirements as specified by Abu Dhabi's ministerial resolution, which bans the marketing of small fish. EAD has urged all fishermen to comply with fishing laws and respect environmental guidelines.
