Obama, Putin at APEC meeting discuss Ukraine, Syria violence and alleviating suffering in Mideast country

  LIMA, Peru – In their first meeting after the US elections last November 8 that saw business magnate Donald Trump as the incoming White House tenant, US President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin met briefly at the start of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in this South American city. A White House statement said that during the four-minute meeting, Obama urged Putin to uphold Russia's commitments under the Minsk deal on Ukraine's sovereignty. In the same statement, Obama told US Secretary of State John Kerry to work with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to work on initiatives to minimize violence in Syria and alleviate suffering in that war-torn Mideast state. The US and Russia have been at odds over the situation in Syria. Aside from this, Russia had been accused of hacking the recent US elections that saw Trump become President-elect. Trump, a rabid critic of Obama, had said he will be friendlier to Putin. Reporters saw the two leaders of the world's superpowers chatting as journalists were entering the venue of the opening session of the APEC summit but it was unclear what they were talking about until the White House issued the statement. After the short chat, the two leaders took to their seats at the summit venue. Meanwhile, Obama is not expected to have formal talks with Putin. Instead, the American leader will meet with his counterparts from Canada and Australia and also attend an Asia-Pacific summit at the sidelines of the APEC meet.
