Obama to veto bill allowing families of 9/11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia

  MANILA - US President Barack Obama would veto a bill allowing survivors and families of victims of the September 11 attacks to sue the Saudi Arabia government for damages, a White House spokesman said. Josh Earnest on Monday said that he anticipates that Obama would veto it once it is presented to him, saying that this law might be used as an excuse to haul US diplomats or US service members or even companies to court around the world. On Friday, the House of Representatives passed the bill by voice vote, without objections, after the Senate passed it unanimously in May. This cleared the way for it to go to the White House for Obama either to sign it into law or veto it. But should Obama veto it, Congressional aides said that the measure has two-thirds majorities both in the Senate and the Lower House enough for the lawmakers to override it. However, this is unlikely to take place soon since Obama is not expected to get the bill until after Congress leaves Washington.
