OFWs call for employment ban in Saudi Arabia following rise in abuse incidents involving Filipinos

  CEBU CITY - A group of overseas Filipino workers (OFW) is calling for President-elect Rodrigo Duterte to impose an employment ban in Saudi Arabia following the high incidence of abuses on undocumented OFWs. John Leonard Monterona, of the United OFW Worldwide, said he wants the incoming administration to help them solve the issue. He cited that most OFWs who experienced abuse from their employers run away, making them undocumented OFWs. Based on their data, there are about 800 undocumented OFWs in Riyadh and there are 3,000 of them in Jeddah. Duterte, in response, said that diplomacy is the answer to this. "We will help them get the proper status. I will ask the Arab countries to be more circumspect in arriving at lalo na sa atin. Mahirap lang tayo but they must understand that there are things that they have to respect and that is dignity," Duterte told reporters in one of his press conferences. With this, the OFW group hopes that the dialogue will help them gain the protection that OFWs need.
