Oil spill forces Fujairah hotels to close beach facilities

DUBAI - An oil spill in Fujairah’s most popular beach forced beach hotels to close their facilities on Sunday. Patches of tar could still be seen along the Al Aqah beach on Monday, days after Cyclone Karr hit parts of the UAE. Residents also reported seeing oil slick floating offshore. Municipality workers were seen clearing up the debris. In Dibba, patches of black oil could be seen coating rocks and the shore. There were no immediate reports on what caused the oil spill in Fujairah, which has one of the UAE's popular shipping ports. Last week, Cyclone Karr caused strong winds and high waves in the UAE’s eastern region, forcing fishermen to stop fishing activities. An Arab man drowned after he was pulled underwater by waves off Al Aqah beach as hewas clearing beach debris brought by the cyclone.
