These old Dubai buildings will be preserved

  DUBAI - Buildings tell stories, too. In Dubai, landmark buildings tell the emirate's rich history, which is why the Dubai Municipality recently launched an initiative to preserve them. The Modern Heritage Initiative covers some of Dubai’s landmark buildings from the sixties and seventies. Najib Mohammed Saleh, director of Planning Department, said the municipality has chosen a short list of buildings as a first stage to protect these buildings. “Many of these buildings still occupy major positions and perform important functions. The buildings have had a great impact on shaping the urban environment and crystallising the architectural character of the 1960s and 1970s of Dubai’s development,” said Ahmad Mahmoud, director of Architectural Heritage Department. Here's a look at the buildings on the protection and preservation list:

Dubai World Trade Centre

This tower on Sheikh Zayed Road is considered the first skyscraper in the region. Deira Clock Tower

The Deira Clock Tower was built in 1963 to celebrate the country's first oil exports and has served as a major landmark in the city. While it stands in the middle of a busy roundabout in Dubai, it also stands at the gateway of Maktoum Bridge. The clock tower is equipped by four Omega clocks that incorporate GPS devies for accuracy.

Al Baraha Hospital

The Al Baraha Hospital is one of the first hospitals to be built in Deira in 1966 and was paid for by the Kuwaiti government. It offers free services to the public. British architect John Harris also designed this 100-bed hospital, which offers open spaces in the centre for ventilation and natural lighting.

Al Ras Library

Dubai's first library was built in 1963 under the guidance of Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum. The Dubai Public Library has been a vital platform for constructive dialogue and exchange of ideas between people of various cultures for more than 50 years.

Al Khuloud Nursery School

The nursery building in Karama was built in 1975 and reflects the blend of modernity and traditional architecture by focusing on natural lighting and shaded spaces. Its design, by architect Jafar Toukan, has been adopted by many schools in the emirates.
