Opening of park last year postponed due to 'animal protocol' for municipality

  DUBAI – Because of animal protocol that the emirate has to follow, the opening date of the Dh1-billion Dubai Safari Park has been reset to a still undetermined date. The animal park at the Al Warqa Fifth District, which will have 1,000 animal species, of which 300 are rare and endangered, was supposed to open last year. The119 hectare-safari is located in what used to be a construction waste landfill and is meant to replace the existing zoo in Jumeirah. Dubai Municipality director-general Hussain Nasser Lootah said the safari park should be ready in three months but he didn't give a specific opening date. With regard the animal protocol, Lootah said animals that are brought into the safari should be blindfolded so they do not see the new area and are slowly released to their new surroundings to get accustomed to it. According to Lootah, technical committees chose the animals to be placed in the safari and determined where to put the animals as their new location should resemble their natural habitat.
