Trump blames Hollywood's 'obssession with him rather than running a smooth show' for flub

HOLLYWOOD - The wrong envelope was given to Best Picture presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. Dunaway mistakenly announced near the end of the 89th Academy Awards yesterday that the musical-love story "La La Land" is best picture but it was actually the small-budget, coming-of-age movie "Moonlight" that won. In a statement, auditing firm Princewaterhousecoopers apologized to the Academy, to the the cast, crew and producers "La La Land" and "Moonlight", to Beatty and Dunaway, and to the viewers for the mix-up as the company assured that an investigation will be conducted to determine why the mistake happened. CNN correspondent Stephanie Elam yesterday reported at the Oscars Governor's Ball after the awards ceremony that Beatty "was handed the wrong card". Here's how everything went. Elam reported that at each end of the stage is an auditor from Pricewaterhousecoopers. Each auditor has same card bearing the name of the winner so that if a mistake is made in the announcement of the winner, it can be corrected immediately. Just before entering the stage, a presenter is given a card bearing the name of the winner by the auditor assigned in that part of the stage and the auditor at the other end of the stage disposes of his copy of the same card. Apparently, the other auditor manning that end of the stage from where Beatty and Dunaway came from forgot to dispose of the card that had the name of Emma Stone as best actress winner and mistakenly gave that same card to Beatty. That was the reason why it took Beatty sometime to announce the winner because he saw Emma Stone's name on the card and it was also for that reason that a perplexed Beatty gave the card to Dunaway, who announced "La La Land" as winner. As the cast, producers and crew of "La La Land" basked in glory, a man rushed onstage to say that the wrong winner was announced. After being told by the show's staffers that an error happened, "La La Land" producer Jason Horowitz took to the mic and announced that there was a mistake and it was "Moonlight" that is the best picture, stressing also that he was not joking. There were gasps of shock and surprise from the audience and then the producers, cast and crew of "Moonlight" went up the stage to receive the best picture trophies from the people behind "La La Land". Stone said in a press conference after the awards ceremony that she had the card that had her name as best actress winner all the time so she doesn't know what really happened. In Washington, US President Donald Trump, who has been the subject of tirades by American celebrities and during the Oscar ceremony, blamed the Best Picture flub on "Hollywood's obsession with him rather than running a smooth show." "(They) were focused so hard on politics. It was a little sad. It took away from the glamour of the Oscar," Trump told the conservative media organization Breitbart News in an interview at the Oval Office. 'Moonlight" director Barry Jenkins said he didn't see anything malicious in the mix-up and that mistakes do happen on a live show. "Moonlight" was made with a very meager budget of US$5 million dollars and didn't have any big stars in its cast. The movie revolved around Chiron, an African-American young man growing up in Miami. "Moonlight" made Oscar history by being the first small-budget film to win best picture and the first movie with an all-black cast and with a gay theme to win the award. It was a huge upset for "La La Land" as the Damien Chazelle film was a favorite for the best picture award. It won best picture in the Golden Globes, British Academy of Film and Television Arts and Critics Choice. The 89th Academy Award had a diverse sets of winners this time. African-American stars Mahershala Ali and Viola Davis yeterday won as best supporting actor and actress, respectively. The diversity in the winners of yesterday's Oscars awards was a sharp contrast to last year's ceremony that was criticized for having black actors or actresses underrepresented in the various categories. The hashtag "OscarsSoWhite" was used to protest the lack of diversity in the 2016 awards.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
