The Bureau of Customs (BOC) foiled an attempt to smuggle 70 kilograms of shabu worth P476 million concealed inside balikbayan boxes at a warehouse in Tondo, Manila on Wednesday (September 2). Customs Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno said the drugs were intercepted after x-ray scanners detected suspicious images in two container vans declared as “household goods and personal effects.” A physical inspection with K9 support later confirmed the presence of methamphetamine hydrochloride, or shabu. The shipment originated from Long Beach, California, and was consigned to a residential address in Bacoor, Cavite. Authorities found 24 kg of shabu hidden in a small box and backpack, 27 kg inside another box mixed with canned goods, and 19 kg in a third box among personal effects. “This successful interception reflects the BOC's commitment to safeguarding the Filipino people from illegal drugs, in line with President Marcos Jr.’s directive to strengthen enforcement,” Nepomuceno said. “Balikbayan boxes symbolize the sacrifices of overseas Filipinos. They should never be used by drug syndicates.” Charges are being prepared under the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 and the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act. The operation was carried out by BOC’s Intelligence Group, Enforcement Group, CIIS-Port of Manila, and Customs Anti-Illegal Drugs Task Force in coordination with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency.
