Expat who helped man wins $1M in UAE

ABU DHABI – Pakistani expatriate Mohammed Shafique was helping a man along an Abu Dhabi Road when he got the $1 million call from Dubai Duty Free: he won the draw. The long-time Abu Dhabi resident said he had stopped to help the distressed man who lost his mobile phone when he received the call from Dubai Duty Free (DDF) Millennium Millionaire Draw officials. Shafique almost couldn’t believe it and thought it was a prank, Khaleej Times reported. When he asked the caller to tell him the winning ticket number, it erased all his doubts. Shafique, 48, bought winning ticket number 4422 online on September 10. "Thank you Dubai Duty Free for this great opportunity to win $1 million in a such a very short time of participating in your promotion. I still cannot believe this is true," Shafique said. The last time he bought a DDF ticket was four years ago. This time, he bought a ticket following a hunch that he might win. Shafique, from Lahore, is the 19th Pakistani national to win the $1 million prize since the DDF raffle draws began in 1999. Shafique, who has lived in Abu Dhabi in the last 30 years, is a business partner at an Abu Dhabi-based property management firm. He has seven children. He said part of his winnings will go to his children’s education and to fund his business. ICA/Expat Media
