Police arrest dozens of people including the village elders

  MULTAN – Elders of a village near this Pakistani city ordered the rape of a 17-year-old girl whose sibling was accused of sexually assaulting another girl. Police arrested dozens of people involved in the two assaults that happened in the town of Muzaffarabad, including the village elders who ordered the retaliatory rape. CNN said 20 were apprehended but the UK's The Guardian reported that police have already arrested 26 people. The first rape victim, who is aged 12, was cutting grass in a field when she was sexually assaulted by a boy. The girl told her mother what happened, who reported the incident to the "panchayat" or village council. According to a police report, the village council elders then decided that one of the boy's sisters would be raped by a brother of the 12-year-old in retaliation. The mother and other sisters of the 17-year-old protested but the village elders threatened to shoot them dead, the police added. Muzaffarabad police officer Rashid Faheem told CNN that investigations were still ongoing and that more arrests are expected. Meanwhile, the director of Multan's Violence Against Women Center told CNN that both mothers and their daughters went to his center after the rapes took place. Center director Salman Sufi said medical examinations on both girls confirmed that they were raped. Salman Sufi said the 17-year-old girl arrived at the center with her mother on July 19, three days before the 12-year-old victim and her mother also asked for help from the center.
