Pakistani woman trapped in Dubai bathroom for 16 hours

DUBAI – A 33-year-old Pakistani woman got trapped in her own bathroom for 16 hours in a freak accident that left her spending the night in terror. Emma Kaiser said she had just stepped into the bathroom of her Deira apartment after going to the gym on July 15 when she realized a few minutes later that the door wouldn’t open as she tried to go out. Kaiser, who lived alone in the apartment, told Khaleej Times she panicked after realizing she would be trapped there with no mobile phone to call for help. The expat said she tried to pry the door open with her makeup brush, nail cutter and scissors, but only managed to dislodge the handle. She even started screaming for help, but it appeared no one could hear her. She was trapped in the bathroom from 7:15pm and was only rescued by 11:30am the next day when her family in Pakistan and Chicago sent help after they tried to call her but couldn't contact her. Her cousin, who has a spare key, turned up at the apartment to check on her. Kaiser said she could hear her outside the bathroom door, so she screamed for help. Kaiser’s cousin broke the bathroom door open with the help of a security guard. The expat expressed “huge relief” at being rescued and advised anyone living alone to “always keep their phone with them”. ICA/Expat Media
