Australian Cardinal George Pell had denied covering up sexual abuse by priests

  MELBOURNE – Cardinal George Pell, a top adviser of Pope Francis, has been charged with multiple historical sexual assault offenses in Australia, according to police. Pell, the most senior Catholic Church official in Australia but based in the Vatican, was charged in connection with abuse of minors by priests in Australia, which he had denied covering up when he served as Archbishop of Melbourne from 1996 t0 2001. But Pell admitted that his predecessor, Archbishop Frank Little, destroyed documents pertaining to the abuse incidents to protect the priests involved. Cardinal Little is now deceased. Victoria State Deputy Police Commissioner Shane Patton said in a news conference on Thursday, "I want to be perfectly clear -- the process and the procedures that have been followed in the charging of Cardinal Pell have been the same that have been applied in a whole range of historical sex offenses whenever we investigate them. Cardinal Pell has been treated the same as anyone else in this investigation." Aside from being a top Papal adviser, Cardinal Pell is also the Vatican's chief financial adviser. In 2013, he was named by Pope Francis as one of the eight cardinals tasked to look for ways to reform the Catholic Church. Victoria police said Cardinal Pell will be required to appear before the Melbourne magistrate on July 18 for the filing hearing. Australia and the Vatican do not have an extradition treaty but Donald Rothwell, a professor of international law at the Australian National University, told CNN that he believes Pell will face the charges in Australia. Rothwell issued the statement based on Pell's comments and Pope Francis' commitment to acknowledging and atoning for the Catholic Church's responsibility in the scandal. "Given Cardinal Pell's very senior position in the church, I believe the Pope would expect the Cardinal to return and face these charges," Rothwell told . The police said the Cardinal is facing multiple charges and there are multiple complainants relating to those charges. A CNN report said the announcement of the charges to be filed against Pell would deal a serious blow to the Catholic Church in Australia whose membership has shrunk in recent years. During an Australian government inquiry in 2013 on the sexual abuse of minors by priests, Pell appeared as a witness and apologized for the abuse. In that same appearance, he acknowledged that cover-ups allowed the erring priests to continue abusing minors. "The primary motivation would have been to respect the reputation of the church. There was a fear of scandal. Many in the church did not understand just what damage was being done to the victims. We understand that better now," Cardinal Pell said back then.
