French capital to make sure that Olympic venues won't go to waste after the Games

  PARIS, France - If Paris indeed gets to host the 2024 Games, organizers said they will make sure that it will be a sober and cost-efficient Olympics. It will be far cry from previous Olympics whose hosts have built venues that have become white elephants and were also met with protests from human rights groups over the forced relocation of affected residents where the venues were constructed. There will also be no huge costs involved in hosting the games, they added. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will convene in Lima, Peru and announce the hosts of the 2024 and 2028 Games. It had been earlier reported that Paris will host the 2024 edition while Los Angeles will be the venue of the 2028 Olympics. Paris wants to convince potential bidders that hosting the Olympics need not make a huge dent in their finances. Matthieu Lamarre, spokesman for Paris City Hall, told the Associated Press: "We have to succeed. We are going to show that it is useful to hold the games." As planned by Paris officials, there will only be one new venue to be built for the games – the aquatic center. The only other completely new venue - an 8,000-seat arena for the basketball and wrestling competitions – had been planned ahead, whether or not Paris got the games. The other venues already exist or will be temporary, they said. For example, the north-south axis of the lawns in front of Napoleon's tomb at the Invalides will be where the archery events will be held while beach volleyball will be played in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower. Taekwondo events will be at the glass-and-steel domed Grand Palais while the spectacular Chateau de Versailles will host the equestrian competitions. Open-water and triathlon swimming will be done at the River Seine and the plan puts pressure on public authorities to follow through on efforts to clean up the waterway and open them for public swimming. Paris has its Metro, two airports and overlapping transport networks so transportation needs are already met. An athletes village and Olympic swimming arena will be set up at the Seine-Denis. The Paris Olympics has the support of many French people. An IOC survey conducted in February showed that of 1,800 people in Paris and elsewhere who were polled, two-thirds were supportive.
