  DUBAI - Fathers will soon be able to take a paternity leave as a draft law is underway following the recent launch of the National Family Policy in the UAE. The Minister of Community Development announced on Sunday that a draft paternity leave legislation will ensure equality in the role that fathers play in parenting. Last year, Dubai issued a new maternity leave law giving female government employees a longer maternity leave for childcare.  The new rule, which was enforced on March 1 this year, gives mothers a 90-day maternity leave. For women in the UAE’s private sector, the law entitles them to maternity leave of 45 days or six weeks. It is not y et clear whether the paternity leave law being drafted will grant the same entitlements to fathers. The National Family Policy, launched last week, will see more than 36 new initiatives implemented across the country, including new childcare legislations. "The ministry aims to develop and regulate legislation and laws related to the care of children inside and outside the home, and to design educational and educational programs for children’s girders to ensure the highest levels of care and safety for the child,” said Hessa Bint Eisa Bu Humaid, Minister of Community Development. The initiatives will include educational programmes, consultations, and training to build a stable and responsible Emirati family, said Bu Humaid. “The policy, which was recently adopted by the UAE Cabinet, will work to provide the utmost support for the UAE family under six pillars that have been identified, which include marriage, family relations, balance of roles, child protection, family protection, and re-engineering the provision of family services to achieve family happiness,” she said. A unified guide will also be prepared to clarify the rights and duties of family members, the general principles of marital relations including special procedures that protect against family disintegration. There are also plans to review and amend the requirements for licensing family counselling centres, as well as workshops and awareness sessions that focus on financial planning. “In the UAE, we have noticed the positive impact of family cohesion on the prosperity and growth of societies in various fields. Our government is fully aware that there is no real development without the development of the human being, which is the nucleus of society development,” she said. The National Family Policy also aims to prepare couples to meet the challenges of married life by providing special educational campaigns carried out for those planning to get married.
