PBA Season 42 opens, 12 teams join new season

  MANILA - The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) opened Sunday in Manila at the SMART Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City, with 12 teams in the roster. This, as the San Miguel Beermen started their quest for a third consecutive All-Filipino championship with a win over the Star Hotshots 96-88. PBA chaiman Mikee Romero opened the new season as the 12 teams paraded at the hardcourt and had current Filipina beauty queens as muses led by newly-crowned Miss International 2015 Kylie Verzosa, who was picked as muse of Star Hotshots team. The opening game between the Beermen and Hotshots saw June Fajardo and Alex Cabagnot taking charge that resulted in a win by the Beermen over the Hotshots. Fajardo, a three-time MVP, finished with 25 points, 16 rebounds, three assists and two blocks, while Cabagnot had 22 points and eight assists to give the Beermen their first win of the season. Paul Lee and Jiovani Jalalon of the Star Hotshots team failed to get a win even if they led the team in lthe third quarter. Meanwhile, at the opening ceremony of the new season, Commissioner Chito Narvasa of the acknowledged the growth of the league last year, renewed collaboration with the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas and also announced the creation of an official PBA app for smartphones, a move welcomed by basketball fans. During the opening parade. 2016 Miss Universe Philippines Maria Mika Maxine Medina was the muse of Meralco Bolts, which placed second in the Governor's Cup.
