  MANILA – Communist insurgents staged two attacks in the Philippines yesterday, a day after the Philippine government and the communist movement decided to resume peace talks. The attacks however did not violate any ceasefire agreement as the Philippines and the Communist Party of the Philippines,New People's Army-National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF) have not yet declared a truce after informal talks were held in Utretcht, Netherlands last week. Members of the NPA, the armed unit of the CPP, set fire to a bus bound for Davao City in Makilala in North Cotabato province in southern Philippines yesterday. No one was hurt in that attack. In Luzon, another NPA group attacked a convoy of Abra provincial police chief, Senior Supt. Alexander Tagum, wounding five policemen. Tagum was unhurt in the attack. Tagum was on his way to a municipal police station that was attacked last Sunday night by communist rebels. The attacks came after Philippine government representatives and those from the NDF held informal talks last Friday and Saturday in the Netherlands to discuss the resumption of peace talks. The backchannel talks were brokered by Norway. President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the suspension of peace talks with the CPP-NPA-NDF last month after the communist rebels attacked government forces in violation of a ceasefire and due to "unreasonable demands" made by the communist organization. The NDF, for its part, accused the government of failing to release all political prisoners and lambasted the military for deploying soldiers in rebel-controlled areas.
