Jackson's departure prompted by Knicks' refusal to let go of embattled player Carmelo Anthony

  NEW YORK – The New York Knicks and the team's president, Phil Jackson, have mutually agreed to call it quits. In a statement, Knicks owner James Dolan said: "After careful thought and consideration, we mutually agreed that the Knicks will be going in a different direction. Phil Jackson is one of the most celebrated and successful individuals in the history of the NBA. His legacy in the game of basketball is unmatched. Talks between the 71-year-old Jackson and Knicks owner James Dolan went fast after the Knicks said it would not accommodate any request to buy out Anthony, who still has two years worth US$54 million left in his contract with the Knicks. Jackson had said it would be best for the Knicks and Anthony to part ways because of the latter's performance but Anthony refused to waive the no-trade clause in his contract. Jackson has decided not to work the two years remaining on his five-year Knicks contract that he signed in 2014 wherein he was being paid US$12 million yearly, especially with a stalemate on Anthony, a PR war over Jackson's preferred triangle offense and concerns about the organization's relationship with Latvian player Kristap Porzingis.
