'Focused operations' planned in central, northern areas of Luzon island

  MANILA – The Philippines is set to start anew its operations against communist insurgents starting with military offensives in central and northern areas of the main island of Luzon. This, after President Rodrigo Duterte called off a unilateral ceasefire with the communist rebels and cancelled peace negotiations with the communist movement. The Philippine Army 7th Division, which operates in provinces in northern and central Luzon, said it will "actively protect the communities and flagship projects of the government threatened by the , and will be ready for any attacks that they are planning." The NPA is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) which held peace talks with the Duterte government in Oslo, Norway in July last year. The Army unit also said arrest warrants will be served on the communist leaders in coordination with the police. Meanwhile, Jose Maria Sison, founder of the CPP , urged Duterte to resume the peace negotiationso so that efforts put into holding the peace talks would not go to waste. Sison said in a statement that "both parties must not lose sight of the gains of the negotiations and must consciously defend it from spoilers." Duterte earlier lifted a unilateral ceasefire with the communist movement in the Philippines and cancelled the peace talks because of "impossible demands" by the CPP.
