Philippine chapel, Saudi mosque included in Building of the Year short-list

  MANILA – A chapel in the Philippines and the KAFD Mosque in Saudi Arabia are included in the short-list of the World Building of the Year. The Chapel of St. Benedict and St. Scholastica located in Pambujan town in the central Philippine province of Northern Samar and the KAFD Mosque in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia will vie in the Religion: Completed Buildings category of the prestigious competition, which is part of the World Architecture Festival (WAF). The WAF started 10 years ago in Barcelona. It moved to Berlin last year. The chapel was designed by WTA Architecture and Design Studio while Mahmoud Abu Ghazal, Omrania and Associates designed the mosque. WAF program director Paul Finch said in a statement, "This year's shortlist has a hugely diverse geographic range. The use of water has been striking and there is evidence of real interest in climate modifications using novel techniques." The winners in each category will be announced during the 2017 WAF on November 15 to 17.
