The Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi is inviting UAE residents to view Juan Luna’s iconic Una Bulaqueña at Louvre Abu Dhabi before the painting returns to the Philippines in June. The invitation forms part of celebrations marking National Heritage Month in the Philippines and highlights the country’s cultural legacy on the global stage. Currently on loan to Louvre Abu Dhabi, Una Bulaqueña is one of the most iconic works by renowned Filipino painter Juan Luna and is recognised as a Philippine National Cultural Treasure. The artwork portrays a woman from Bulacan, a province known for its deep cultural heritage and role in the Philippine nationalist movement. Dressed in traditional Filipino attire consisting of the camisa, saya, pañuelo and tapis, while holding a folded fan and handkerchief, the figure reflects the elegance, dignity and refinement of Filipino womanhood during the colonial era. According to the Philippine Embassy, the exhibition reflects the Philippines’ continuing commitment to preserving and sharing its cultural heritage with the international community through cultural diplomacy and exchange. The loan was made possible through collaboration between the Department of Foreign Affairs, the National Museum of the Philippines and Louvre Abu Dhabi. Following its first international exhibition, the masterpiece is expected to return to the Philippines next month. The embassy encouraged UAE residents to seize what may be their final opportunity to see one of the Philippines’ most treasured artworks before its return home. Meanwhile, visitors can enjoy free museum access from May 16 to 18 as Louvre Abu Dhabi marks International Museum Day. Visitors can join the complimentary “From the Philippines” guided tour every Saturday at 4:30pm, offering deeper historical and artistic context behind the celebrated painting. ICA/Expat Media
