'Pedicab' is about a poor family travelling to a distant province in a pedicab

  MANILA – The Philippines' "Pedicab" won best picture at the 20th Shanghai International Film Festival. The Shanghai, Tokyo and Goa film festivals are the three A-list film competitions in Asia. Directed by Paolo Villaluna, the movie was inspired by a Philippine Daily Inquirer article and tells about a destitute family that travels from an impoverished part of Metro Manila to a distant province in a rickety pedicab. The original title of the movie is "Pauwi Na" (Heading Home) and it picked up six awards at the ToFarm film festival in the Philippines last year. "For the humanism and universality of the story, for the simplicity of the style and realization — for the non-conformism with which it represented our desire to believe that there is a sense in this universe, the award for the best film goes to 'Pedicab', from the Philippines," said jury president, Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu, said as he called Villaluna and his team to accept the trophy. Villaluna was accompanied by cast members Cherry Pie Picache and Bembol Roco as he received the Golden Goblet trophy from Mingiu, who won best director for "Bacalaureate" in Cannes last year. Villaluna, Picache and Roco had a picture with Mingiu after the awards night held at the Shanghai Grand Theater. "Pedicab" beat 13 other notable films from around the world, including "Yellow" by Iranian director Mostafa Taghizad'h, which won the grand jury prize; Russia's "Kharms" helmed by Ivan Bolotnikov, which picked up the best screenplay and cinematographer awards; and Maciej Pieprzyca's "I Am a Killer" from Poland. Pieprzyca was named best director. Villaluna told the Inquirer he almost fainted onstage out of sheer emotion. In his acceptance speech, he dedicated the award to all Filipinos. Roco said the award proves that "Filipino filmmakers are as competitive as their peers from around the world" while Picache said she felt proud for the country. Picache said she got to meet Milla Jovovich and 2017 Academy Award best actress nominee Isabelle Huppert in Shanghai. Prior to competing in China, Villaluna was concerned that foreign audiences may not be able to relate well with "Pedicab" because of its Filipino theme and storytelling but his fear was unfounded. Villaluna recalled that a Chinese moviegoer wept while chatting with Picache and Roco after a screening, telling them that the movie "changed lives and told the truth well."
