Filipinos across the UAE gathered at Dubai World Trade Centre on Saturday (June 14) to celebrate the 127th Philippine Independence Day, in what organizers say was one of the largest Filipino cultural gatherings in the region. The event, themed “Filipino Pride: Embracing Diversity, Celebrating Unity and Love of Country,” was organized by the Filipino Social Club (FilSoc) in collaboration with Philippine government agencies and Filipino community organizations. “This year’s celebration reflects the strength and unity of the Filipino community,” said FilSoc President Ericson Reyes. “More than just a commemoration of our independence, PID 2025 has become a platform where we celebrate our culture, honor our heritage, and empower our youth.” Dignitaries from both the UAE and the Philippines attended the event, including Dr. Hamad Al Musafri from the UAE Ministry of Community Empowerment, Huraiz Bin Huraiz from the Community Development Authority, and Philippine officials Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac, Ambassador Alfonso Ferdinand Ver, and Consul General Marford Angeles. A highlight of the event was the presence of Polish wake-surfing sensation Karolina Agata Sankiewicz, popularly known as “Surfer Barbie,” who gained viral fame for wake-surfing through Dubai wearing a modern Filipiniana and waving the Philippine flag. The celebration featured a day-long lineup of performances and competitions, including the Philippine Choral Festival, with six choir groups, including the all-female Russian Angels Singing Chamber Choir. It also hosted the Munting Ginoo at Binibini Kalayaan 2025, featuring 60 children in traditional attire, and Mr. and Ms. Kalayaan 2025. Filipino star Enrique Gil headlined the Kalayaan Concert with Carmela Lorzano, plus opening acts Junior Brown and PhatG Legendary. There were also academic and interactive activities such as the Kalayaan Chess Tournament, Likha ng Siyensya Robotics Challenge, and MathIIEEnik Quiz Bee. “We are overwhelmed with the outpouring of support. This is not just a celebration—it is a movement of cultural pride,” said Christian Belleza, chairman of FilSoc’s Philippine Independence Day celebration in Dubai this year. “The youth, schools, artists, and volunteers all came together to make this truly memorable. They are the heart of this celebration.” ICA/Expat MediaFor all the latest news from the UAE and the world, follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and subscribe to our YouTube page
