Filipinos from across the UAE gathered at Dubai World Trade Centre on Saturday (June 13) for a vibrant Philippine Independence Day celebration that highlighted the community's culture, heritage and enduring spirit of bayanihan. While Philippine Independence Day is officially observed on June 12, Filipino organizations in the UAE traditionally hold their celebrations on the nearest weekend to allow more members of the community to participate. This year's event, organized by the Filipino Social Club (FilSoc), brought together students, professionals, families, volunteers, government agencies and community organizations for a day-long program commemorating the 128th anniversary of Philippine independence. The celebration was supported by Dubai's Community Development Authority (CDA), the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), the Philippine Embassy, the Philippine Consulate General, and the Migrant Workers Offices in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Among the dignitaries in attendance were Department of Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac, Philippine Ambassador Alfonso Ferdinand Ver, Philippine Consul General Ambrosio Brian Enciso III, and Labor Attaché John Rio Bautista. The festivities opened with the Community Unity Parade, featuring Filipino organizations, schools and community groups in colourful displays of Filipino heritage. Throughout the day, attendees enjoyed cultural performances, youth competitions, educational activities and entertainment programs designed to celebrate Filipino identity and achievement. Among the highlights were Drum and Lyre performances, a Kids Fashion Show, regional festival presentations, a Math Quiz Bee, Robotics and Innovation competitions, and the Tula at Pinta poetry and painting event. The celebration culminated in an evening concert and recognition ceremonies that showcased the diversity, talent and achievements of Filipinos living and working in the UAE.

‘A renewed sense of pride’

Speaking to Expat Media after the event, Filipino Social Club President Ericson Reyes described gratitude as his biggest takeaway from this year's celebration. "It's overwhelming in the best way to see Filipinos from different backgrounds come together as one community. We had students, professionals, families, volunteers, government partners, sponsors and community organizations all sharing one purpose, to celebrate our heritage and what it means to be Filipino," Reyes said. He said the significance of Independence Day extends beyond commemorating a historical event. "Independence Day is also about recognizing the sacrifices of those who came before us and asking ourselves how we can contribute to our country and community wherever we are in the world," he said. "As overseas Filipinos, we may be far from home, but moments like these remind us that the Filipino spirit of bayanihan, resilience and compassion remains very much alive." He said organizers hoped attendees left the venue with a stronger appreciation for their heritage and community. "I hope everyone who attended went home with a renewed sense of pride and belonging. This celebration was for every Filipino in the UAE," he said. When asked by Expat Media about his proudest moments from the celebration, Reyes said it was difficult to single out one highlight. "Honestly, my proudest moment wasn't just one particular segment, it was seeing the entire community come together and making it all work," he said. "From the Unity Parade in the morning to the performances, the awards, the cultural presentations, and the evening concert, seeing people smile, cheer, and celebrate with genuine joy made all the months of preparation worth it." He said one of the most encouraging aspects of the event was seeing younger Filipinos actively embrace their culture. "I was especially proud to see our young people actively participating, whether through the Drum and Lyre performances, the Kids Fashion Show, the Festival presentations, our STEM activities such as the Math Quiz Bee and Robotics and Innovation competition, Tula at Pinta, or simply being present and learning more about our culture." "It gave me hope that even the next generation of Filipinos growing up abroad will continue to value and carry our traditions," he said. The participation of UAE authorities and Philippine government agencies also stood out for organizers. "Seeing our UAE partners and Philippine government agencies standing with us was a powerful reminder that community building is a shared effort," Reyes said. "Yesterday wasn't just a successful event, it was proof that when Filipinos unite, we can create something meaningful, inspiring, and truly memorable."
