Duterte tells Senator De Lima to face the charges

  MANILA – Three charges in connection with the illegal drug trade at the national penitentiary have been filed against Senator Leila De Lima and seven others by the Department of Justice (DOJ). With the filing of the charges, De Lima, who is an opposition senator, faces arrest and detention without bail. Charged with the lady senator are her former bodyguard driver Ronnie Dayan, nephew Jose Adrian Tiamson Dera, deputy director Rafael Ragos of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), former Bureau of Corrections chief Franklin Bucayu, Wilfredo Elli – alleged bagman of Bucayu, inmate Jaybee Sebastian, and De Lima's other former bodyguard Joenel Tan Sanchez. In a complaint filed with the Municipal Trial Court in Muntinlupa City, prosecutors accused De Lima and her fellow respondents of violating the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. De Lima, during her stint as justice secretary, was accused of tolerating the operation of drug syndicates at the national penitentiary called the National Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa in exchange for funds to finance her senatorial campaign in last year's general elections. The senator has denied the accusations, calling them politically-motivated. Justice Undersecretary Eric Balmes said the criminal cases would be raffled off on Monday and it would be up to the courts that will handle the cases if it will issue arrest warrants againt De Lima and the others. Meanwhile, President Rodrigo Duterte said De Lima should face the charges filed against her. He said the senator, who is a vocal critic of Duterte's bloody campaign against the illegal drug trade in the country, should face the consequences of her actions.
