Noven Belleza allegedly molested the 19-year-old victim in his condo unit in Cebu

  MANILA – A winner of the Philippines' oldest amateur singing competition was charged with sexual assault yesterday for allegedly molesting a 19-year-old girl in his condominium unit in the central Philippine city of Cebu last weekend. Twenty-two-year-old Noven Belleza, a farmer of Negros Occidental province in the Visayas region, was arrested on Saturday night after performing as a guest in a concert of comedian Vice Ganda at the IEC Pavilion in Cebu City. The arrest was made after a 19-year-old friend of Belleza initially claimed that he raped her. Belleza was detained in a police station that day but later complained of chest pains so he was put under hospital arrest. The rape charge however was downgraded by Cebu City Assistant Prosecutor Ma. Theresa Casiño to sexual assault based on evidence that was presented to her. This, after the victim told police that Belleza inserted a finger into her private part, which constitutes sexual assault while rape is when a man forcibly penetrates a woman. Unlike rape, sexual assault is a balable offense so Casiño recommended a 120,000-peso-bail for Belleza's release. Belleza's lawyer Leilani Villarino said they chose to waive their right to a preliminary investigation to refute the allegation against Belleza and will answer in court instead. Villarino told the Philippine Daily Inquirer: "We will answer everything during court trial. What is important now is he (Belleza) will be able to post bail. For now, he enjoys the presumption of innocence." Belleza won the "Tawag ng Tanghalan (Call of the Stage) singing contest of ABS-CBN's nnontime show "It's Showtime" last March. The victim also competed in the same contest and based on police investigation, that was where they knew each other and became textmates. "It's Showtime's Tawag ng Tanghalan" is the second revival of the original talent search that started in 1953 and ran until 1972 and then revived in 1987 to 1988. Philippine superstar Nora Aunor is among the past winners of the singing contest. Meanwhile, ABS-CBN said they are gathering information about Belleza and his case and will issue a statement on the matter soon.
