Philippine travel ban on UAE, 9 other countries extended again

  DUBAI – The Philippines has further extended a ban on travelers from the UAE and nine other countries until August 15 as part of efforts to curb the spread of a new Covid-19 variant. The travel ban extension was announced on Friday and affects UAE, Oman, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. “President Rodrigo Roa Duterte approved the recommendation of the Inter-Agency Task Force to extend the travel restrictions currently imposed (on) 10 countries starting August 1 until August 15, 2021,” said Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque, also acting as IATF-EID spokesperson. Travelers with a history of travel from any of the seven countries in the last 14 days prior to their trip to the Philippines will also be denied entry. Currently only Filipinos on repatriation flights or chartered flights are allowed entry into the country while the travel ban is in place. The Philippines initially imposed travel restrictions on India from April 29, before widening the ban to include Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka from May 7, and adding Oman and UAE to the list on May 15. The decision to continue to impose the travel ban came amid a surge in Delta variant cases in the Philippines where 97 more cases were reported as of July 29, bringing the country’s total case count to 216. About 88 of the 97 new Delta variant cases are local cases, six are returning overseas Filipinos, and three others are still being verified. Of the 97 new cases, 94 have been tagged as recovered and three have died. The Delta variant, which was first detected in India, is driving new outbreaks across the Asia-Pacific region, including Southeast Asia. It is found to be 60 percent more infectious.
