The country initially backed out as host due to instability in Mindanao

MANILA – The Philippines will host the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in 2019, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) announced on Thursday. Robespierre Bolivar, spokesperson for the DFA, said President Rodrigo Duterte "approved the PH hosting for 2019" and that Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano will serve as chairman of the organizing committee for the hosting of the 30th SEA Games. The Philippines announced in July 2015 that it is taking over as host of the 30th SEA Games from Brunei after the latter backed out in 2015. Brunei explained that its Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports failed to give support for the tournament and also cited the lack of sporting facilities, accommodation, and preparation of their athletes. Last July however, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman William "Butch" Ramirez announced that the Philippines was withdrawing as 2019 SEA Games host because of the unstable peace and order situation in Mindanao as well as terrorism and other atrocities in the country's second largest island. Ramirez also said the funds intended for the 2019 SEA Games would be used in the rehabilitation of war-torn Marawi, which was overrun by local terrorists linked to the Islamic State in May. However, the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) pleaded to the PSC and to Malacañang to reconsider its decision to withdraw as 2019 SEA Games host. Cayetano endorsed the hosting chore to President Rodrigo Duterte. Meanwhile, Cayetano said the SEA Games in 2019 can be used by the Philippines to showcase the sports and talent of the Filipinos. It can also serve as preparation of the country's athletes for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, he added.
