Gilas Pilipinas marks 3rd consecutive victory by disposing of Qatar
BEIRUT – Despite a depleted roster, Gilas Pilipinas defeated Qatar 80-74 to sweep Group B in the group phase of the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup at the Nouhad Nawfal Sports Complex at Lebanon's capital.
The Filipinos will play against whoever will win in the game between Japan and Korea later today (Monday). The quarterfinals will be on Wednesday.
Sunday's game against Qatar saw the Gilas team without big man Christian Standhardinger, who did not play because because of a stiff neck and shoulder, and Calvin Abueva, who sprained his ankle after slipping on the court. Raymond Almazan, for his part, committed foul.
The Filipinos arrived in Beirut without Andray Blatche, who had security concerns about Lebanon, and June Mar Fajardo, who is nursing a calf injury although he is with the team in Lebanon.
Matthew Wright compensated for the absence of Standhardinger and Abueva by contributing 25 points with seven triple-shots and four assists. Carl Bryan Cruz and Gabe Norwood helped the team push against Qatar, which relied heavily on Mansour Elhadary and Abdulrahman Saad.
With its loss to Gilas, Qatar is left winless in the tournament.
