Philippines lands at 6th place in medal standings – its worst finish since 1999

  KUALA LUMPUR – The 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games held a spectacular closing ceremony late Wednesday night with the host country declared as champion by leading the biennial sporting event in the medal standings. Malaysia gathered a total of 323 medals (145 golds, 92 bronzes, 86 silvers) from 404 events in 38 sports. The Philippines, which will host the 30th SEA Games in 2019, gathered 121 medals (24 golds, 33 silvers, 64 bronzes). The number of gold medals was way below its target of 50. With that, the Philippines landed sixth in the medal ranking – the country's worst finish since the 1999 SEA Games held in Brunei where the Filipino contingent managed to win 20 golds, 26 silvers and 46 bronzes. In the 2013 and 2015 SEA Games, the Philippines won 29 golds. The last time the Philippines finished strongly in the SEA Games was when the country hosted the regional sports event in 2005 when it won 113 golds, 84 silvers and 94 bronzes. Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) chairman Jose Cojuangco said Filipinos should move on from the debacle and look ahead to 2019 when Manila hosts the SEA Games. Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, who is the 2019 SEA Games organizing committee chairman, urged Philippine sports officials to work as a team and focus on doing well in the sports competitions to come like the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia and the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
