The Philippine entertainment industry is mourning the passing of two of its most beloved icons—Nora Aunor and Pilita Corrales—who died just days apart, leaving behind decades of legacy in film, television, and music.

Superstar Nora Aunor dies at 71

Nora Aunor, hailed as the Philippine "Superstar" and proclaimed National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts in 2022, died on Wednesday (April 16), at the age of 71. Her death was confirmed by her son Ian de Leon, who shared an emotional post on social media that same evening.Her daughter, Matet de Leon, also paid tribute with a simple yet heartfelt message on Instagram: “I love you mommy.” Nora Aunor, born Nora Cabaltera Villamayor in Iriga City, Camarines Sur, first captured hearts in the 1960s with her powerful singing voice before becoming one of the most acclaimed actresses in Philippine cinema. Breaking stereotypes with her morena features and petite frame, Aunor rose to stardom in an industry dominated by Western ideals of beauty. Her filmography includes landmark films such as Himala (1982), Bulaklak sa City Jail (1984), and The Flor Contemplacion Story (1995). In 1976, she bagged her first Best Actress honors from both the Gawad Urian and FAMAS for Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos. She achieved a rare “grand slam” in 1990 with Andrea, Paano Ba ang Maging Isang Ina?, earning Best Actress awards from all major film bodies: Gawad Urian, FAMAS, Film Academy of the Philippines, Metro Manila Film Festival, and the Philippine Movie Press Club. In 2013, she was named Best Actress at the Asian Film Awards in Hong Kong for Thy Womb, further cementing her international acclaim. Despite her success, Aunor faced several health scares in her later years. In a 2023 interview with Boy Abunda, she revealed a near-death experience caused by low oxygen levels. "Ang nangyari, hindi ko alam, walang tumulong. Hindi minadali na lagyan ako ng oxygen... Humiga ako tapos hindi ko na alam kung anong nangyari. 'Pag gising ko, nando'n na ako sa ICU," she recalled. She also survived a car accident in 1982 during the filming of Himala. Aunor was once married to actor Christopher de Leon. The couple had one biological son, Ian, and four adopted children—Lotlot, Matet, Kiko, and Kenneth. Their marriage was annulled in 1996. Her most recent work includes a cameo in the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) movie-musical Isang Himala and a lead role in the horror film Mananambal, which premiered in theaters on February 19.

Pilita Corrales dies peacefully at 85

Just days earlier, the Philippines also said goodbye to Asia’s Queen of Songs, Pilita Corrales, who died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday (April 12). She was 85. Her children, Jackie Lou Blanco and Ramon Christopher “Monching” Gutierrez, confirmed the news, expressing gratitude that their mother did not suffer in her final moments. “She died in her sleep, actually — which I am very thankful for. She wasn’t hospitalized, and she didn’t have any lingering illness,” Jackie said in Filipino. Though Corrales had long struggled with a heart condition and had experienced memory issues in recent years, her children said she was otherwise in stable health before her passing. Pilita’s cremated remains are at Heritage Park in Taguig City and were scheduled to be kept there until Wednesday, the same day as Aunor’s death. Corrales, a multi-awarded singer and trailblazer, became known for her iconic bent-over singing pose and timeless hits. She performed across Asia, Australia, and the US, and mentored younger performers throughout her career, earning her the moniker "Asia's Queen of Songs." With the passing of these two cultural pillars, Filipinos are left grieving but grateful for the enduring contributions of both Nora Aunor and Pilita Corrales to the country's artistic and cultural history.
