Philippines: PNP remind students to be wary of strangers as classes begin, kidnapping cases increase

The chief law enforcement officer of the Philippines urged students to be vigilant, particularly when approached by strangers. Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr., the chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), reminds students as face-to-face classes begin for the school year 2022-2023. The police forces are stepping up their watch against criminals and drug peddlers preying on students as cases of kidnapping and disappearances have become rampant in the country. "For the PDEG I have instructions to them that we do not only concentrate on the arrest of drug pushers, drug users but we need to bring our campaign against drugs to the awareness of every Filipino, every community, every student. Everyone knows what the bad effects of drugs are on every Filipino who uses or is enticed to use," he said in a press briefing shortly after the flag-raising rites in Camp Crame. Azurin also instructed the police to increase their presence in schools and be ready to assist anyone who needed it, including children, teachers, and parents. He stated that they are working with schools to arrange for police officers to attend student orientations as part of their information-sharing efforts. He also said they are coordinating with schools to allow police officers to join orientations for students for their information dissemination drives. A total of 23,653 police officers are currently stationed in crucial areas. Azurin said police officers could assist with issues within schools if necessary, but he reminded them that they are only permitted outside school grounds. He also ordered the Highway Patrol Group to intensify patrols and ensure that public transport vehicles plying the streets are authorized to prevent students from hailing colorum vehicles. "We encourage all our students to check what they are riding and then take note of the plate number, what is the name of the taxi or what is the name of the public transport they are riding." Azurin stated that the PNP is prepared to send out suitable cars for free trips for stranded students but added that it would receive direction from the Department of Transportation and the DepEd regarding its necessity.
