South Korean businessman was killed inside the national police camp, probe shows

  MANILA – South Korean businessman Jee Ick-joo, who was abducted by policemen in the guise of a drug raid in October last year, was strangled to death inside a vehicle parked inside the Philippine National Police (PNP) headquarters in Quezon City, according to an investigation of the incident. This, as the alleged mastermind, Ricky Sta. Isabel, and another policeman were arrested and indicted for murder and kidnapping of Jee, who is an executive of the Hanjin company. House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, an ally of President Rodrigo Duterte, called on PNP chief Ronald dela Rosa to resign to save Duterte from further embarrassment following the involvement of policemen in the abduction and murder of Jee. Jee was taken by policemen along with helper from his rented house in Angeles City in Pampanga province last October under the guise of a drug raid. The abductors demanded P5 million from Jee's wife, which she paid. Inspite of that, Jee was killed and cremated in a crematorium owned by a former police official. Jee's ashes were then flushed down a toilet. Jee's murder has angered Seoul as the South Korean government sought answers as to how and why the killing happened. South Korea also demanded that the Philippines prosecute those involved in the crime. The crime scene at the PNP camp was just a few steps away from the so-called "White House", where dela Rosa lives and holds office at Camp Crame - the name of the PNP headquarters. Alvarez said "the commission of a heinous crime right under his (dela Rosa) very nose is not only an insult but a clear indication that he has lost the respect of his people." "Dela Rosa should buckle down to work or better yet, give the job to someone else who is dead serious in leading the PNP in its multipronged war against drugs, criminals and scalawags within its ranks," said Alvarez in a press statement. Dela Rosa, who is from the same province as Duterte, described the call for his resignation as "cruel" and that critics should tell Duterte to fire him. "Do they think I'm enjoying my work so they want me to resign? That's too much. How cruel of them to say that I should resign," said an emotional dela Rosa.
